Police canvass area of Miami Beach after spotting carjacked Jetta

People in Miami Beach were told by police they should avoid the Venetian Causeway near DiLido Island on Tuesday evening as officers search for at least two people who are accused in an armed carjacking that took place earlier in the day, authorities said.

The people sought by police are considered armed and dangerous, said Ernesto Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department.

The carjacking took place about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday near the 300 block of 71st Street. A silver Volkswagen Jetta was stolen, but no one was physically hurt, Rodriguez said.

Police spotted the stolen car on the Venetian Causeway this evening. The people inside the Jetta took off near DiLido Island.

As of just before 5:45 p.m., officers were in the process of canvassing the area.
